The Poker vocabulary desk

A starting reference for common actions and community-card stage names.

Common actions

Fold means leaving the current hand. Check passes the action without adding a bet when permitted. Call matches the amount required to continue. Raise increases that amount according to the rules and limits.

Community-card stages

In Hold’em, flop, turn and river name the stages when the shared cards are revealed. Check the specific variant’s flow rather than assuming these names describe every poker game.

At comparison

Showdown is the comparison of remaining hands when the hand reaches that point. A kicker is a side card that may matter when comparing particular equal-ranked groups.

Build a small glossary

Write down a term, its plain-language meaning and one example situation. Follow a demonstrated hand and pause when the term appears.

Context matters

An app may use short labels or a different interface. Read the current instructions before pressing an unfamiliar control, and confirm the action order for your chosen format.
