# Poker Betting Rules
Disclaimer: This guide is for recreational learning only. Real-money gambling is not encouraged. Poker betting rules control how players add chips to the pot, and these rules are used in popular variants like Texas Hold’em, Omaha, and Five-Card Draw.
Basic Terms
- **Pot**: The total chips in the centre, won by the player with the best hand at showdown.
- **Ante**: A small mandatory chip amount every player puts into the pot before cards are dealt (not used in all games).
- **Blinds**: Forced bets used in Texas Hold’em and Omaha. There are two blinds:
- Small Blind: smaller forced bet
- Big Blind: usually double the small blind
- **Call**: Match the current highest bet to stay in the hand.
- **Raise**: Put in more chips than the current highest bet, forcing others to call or re-raise.
- **Fold**: Drop out of the hand. You lose all chips you have already put into the pot and wait for the next hand.
- **Check**: Pass the action to the next player without betting. You can only check if no one has placed a bet yet in that round.
Betting Order
Betting moves clockwise around the table. In blind games, action starts from the player after the big blind. Betting rounds happen after cards are dealt: pre-flop, flop, turn, river (Texas Hold’em).
Standard Betting Options on Your Turn
1. **Check**: No bet, keep your hand active (only if no bet is open).
2. **Bet**: Open the betting round with a new amount.
3. **Call**: Match the latest bet or raise.
4. **Raise**: Increase the bet size.
5. **Fold**: Give up your hand.
Minimum Bet & Raise Rules
- The minimum bet is equal to the big blind.
- The minimum raise size must be **at least the size of the previous raise**.
Example: If the bet is 10 chips, a raise must be at least 20 chips total. If someone raises to 30, the next raise has to add at least 20 more chips.
- You cannot make a tiny raise that is smaller than the legal minimum.
All-In Rule
When a player does not have enough chips to call the full bet, they can go **all-in**. They put all their remaining chips into the pot.
- They stay eligible to win the pot up to the amount they put in.
- A separate side pot is created for any extra chips from players who bet more than the all-in player. The all-in player cannot win money from the side pot.
Betting Limits
There are three common betting structures:
1. **No-Limit**: Players can bet or raise any amount up to their total chips at any time. Texas Hold’em no-limit is the most famous version.
2. **Pot-Limit**: The maximum you can bet or raise is equal to the current size of the pot.
3. **Fixed-Limit**: Bets and raises are locked to a set size. You can only raise by that fixed amount.
Showdown
Once all betting rounds finish and two or more players remain, there is a showdown. Players reveal their cards, and the best poker hand wins the pot.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Confusing check and call: You cannot check if someone has already bet.
- Making a raise smaller than the minimum raise.
- Forgetting side pots when someone goes all-in.
- Raising out of turn; always wait for the action to reach you.
